Speaking at Consensus 2025, O’Leary Ventures chairman Kevin O’Leary explained why the crypto market has stalled — unclear regulations. According to him, institutional giants like pension and sovereign wealth funds are waiting on the sidelines until the rules are clear.
SEC Shifts Direction Under New Leadership
Kevin revealed he once received a Wells Notice from the SEC for discussing debt tokenization, which distanced him from the regulator. However, after Gary Gensler's departure, the new SEC Chair Paul Atkins has signaled a crypto-friendly approach and dropped many previous cases.
“I never thought I’d say this, but I want more regulation and I want it now,” said O’Leary, emphasizing the urgent need for a regulatory framework.
O’Leary Is a Major HBAR Shareholder
One highlight was Kevin revealing his significant investment in HBAR. He also holds positions in ETH, Avalanche, Solana, and Polygon — focusing on assets with strong real-world applications. Once token classifications as securities or commodities are finalized, he expects a massive capital inflow into the top tokens.
Kevin concluded that crypto will become a major part of the global economy within the next five years by enabling faster, cheaper cross-border payments.
